Nourishing neighborhoods starts with empowering neighborhoods.
Food insecurity affects 13 million children each day, a stark reality that sets kids up for struggles in school today and chronic health conditions tomorrow – conditions that can, heartbreakingly, lead to the loss of real years of life.
Communities of color bear a disproportionate amount of that burden. With food playing a central role in everyone’s everyday life, we can draw a direct line between nutritious food, good health and racial equity.
Encouragingly, grassroots organizations and regional food banks across America have identified strategies to change food systems and empower the very neighborhoods affected by food insecurity to author their own solutions.
Created in partnership with Sankofa Consulting, the Nourishing Neighborhoods Report showcases how 28 organizations in six major American cities have addressed food insecurity in ways that respect the agency, dignity and inherent strength of their communities.
